Important Suktas from Rigveda

When a verse is given to explain in the exam, these are to be written –

  1. Identify the Sukta in which the particular mantra appears.
  2. Rishi
  3. Devata, deity
  4. Chandas or prosody
  5. Do ‘Padapaata’
  6. Apply vedicswaras or accents
  7. Write the description

Identifying the Sukta

सवितृ- Look for words – ‘सवितृ , ‘हिरण्य’

विष्णु- Known for his 3 steps.

इन्द्र- Ends with ‘सजनासइन्द्रः’ in most of the verses.

रुद्र- Look for words रुद्र, उग्र, भेषज, भिषक

उषस- Feminine gender.

अग्नि- Word Agni. But note, Agni is worshipped in the first mantra of SavitrSukta .

वरुण- Word Varuna. If not, read the verse and go by the meaning. (only 1 verse was asked in exam)

अक्ष- Look for words अक्ष ,कितव , मौजवत

भाववृत्त- First word is नासदासीन्नो. Go by the meaning

Rishi  –

Once you know the Sukta, it is easy to recollect the Rishi. Refer to the chart given at the end.

Deity

Usually the same Devata as of the Sukta. But for AkshaSukta, the deities are अक्षमौजवानदेवता.

Paramatman is the deity for Bhavavrutta or Nasadeeyasukta

Identifying Chandas

For our syllabus, only 2 major ones are given.
